If fuel is to a car, then coffee is to a person. It is what most of us need to keep going for the day. For some, they cannot function well without their daily dose of caffeine. 89% of the U.S. population consume caffeine regularly. Would you believe that approximately 1.6 billion cups of coffee are being consumed daily worldwide? Four hundred million of which are consumed by Americans.
Although caffeine can be consumed in other forms such as energy drinks, tea, soft drinks, and even medication, a study of caffeine intake in college students showed that coffee is the primary caffeine source. The college students were likewise surveyed regarding their caffeine consumption, and 79% answered that they consume caffeine to feel awake. Other reasons include enjoying the taste, alleviating stress, reducing fatigue, improving concentration, improving mood, and increased physical energy and socialization.
Like everything in this world, coffee consumption has its upsides and drawbacks. Coffee contains antioxidants that, if taken in moderation, can improve one’s memory. One of the reported reasons college students consume coffee is to improve concentration, and for some, it improves their focus while in class or during studying. It has also been shown in several studies that drinking coffee has health benefits such as prevention of dementia and Parkinson’s disease, decreasing risks of heart disease, and reducing the chances of having type-2 diabetes. But one must remember that too much of anything is bad and that coffee must be consumed in moderation or a maximum of four cups a day for a total of 400 milligrams of caffeine only.
The negative effects of drinking excessive coffee include loss of sleep, stomach upset, bad cholesterol, anxiety, irritability, and excessive intake, which can cause health risks such as rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and decreased bone density. Including those, it can prevent if taken in moderation only. If you drink several cups of coffee a day, your caffeine tolerance will increase, and your body will need more of it than usual to function as you want it to. Aside from its effect on one’s body, supporting a coffee addiction can be expensive. An individual spends up to $638 every year buying coffee from shops.
Fortunately, it has been shown in a recent study that most of the college student participants can last 48 to 72 hours without caffeine intake. This means that they are not entirely dependent on their daily caffeine fix. A high number of participants stated that they drink caffeinated beverages for their taste rather than for its effects, and a great number admitted to having increased caffeine consumption than usual when they stepped into college. But still, some need their daily caffeine consumption, those trying to quit it altogether, and those who crave caffeine. They do not, however, comprise the majority of the college student participants in the study.
The effect of coffee consumption is never the same for different individuals. The experience is always as unique as our bodies react differently to caffeine. Existing medical conditions might worsen the effect of caffeine in one’s system. If you have been a regular coffee drinker, remember that moderation is the key. It is best to monitor your body and brain’s reaction first for those new or still thinking about whether to start drinking coffee.
For coffee dependents, getting that caffeine fix several times daily is the norm. College students are more than willing to spend on a cup of coffee rather than on food. Their day won’t be as productive without a cup of coffee. This is especially true for college students who have to stay up late reading hundreds of pages, meeting deadlines, and other academic demands on top of attending hours of classes during the day. College students also often meet for a group study, hang out, or date in coffee shops considering its proximity to the campus.
According to the National Coffee Association, 64% of Americans who drink coffee every day are in college students from 18 to 24 years old. It is no wonder that several coffee shops can be found around, if not inside, universities and colleges. If you are looking for the best college town coffee shops near you, browse through this list, and you might find the perfect coffee in a place with the right ambiance that offers the best perks.

Walker’s Coffee Shop and Pub
Coffee shop by day, pub by night. This is the best way to describe Walker’s Coffee Shop and Pub. The lights are dimmed, the speaker’s blast, the karaoke is set. Don’t forget that they also serve spirited coffee drinks such as the Irish Kiss Hot Chocolate, Walker’s Cider, and Keoke Coffee all day. Literally and figuratively, a mix of both the shop and the pub. Who said you couldn’t have the best of both worlds?

Bordertown Coffee
Besides serving ethically sourced coffee from small farms and serving freshly baked goods, what makes Bordertown Coffee—which is essentially a non-profit devoted to helping feed children—stands on a property with a rich history.
Located at 315 16th Ave. S.E. in Minneapolis, Minnesota, right inside the University of Minnesota, Bordertown Coffee used to be the Theta Chi Fraternity house. Despite Bordertown expressing its interest in the property, it was eventually sold to a developer. It was soon set to be demolished until the Heritage Preservation Commission declared it for historic consideration.
Bordertown used a $300,000 cash gift to acquire the building, but rioters broke in and torched it before the deal was closed. Members of the Sigma Nu fraternity dealt with the situation to help kick the rioters out.
When the dust settled, the historic structure was renovated and reconstructed with the help of volunteers. A year later, Bordertown Coffee finally came to be!
