In a National Student Clearinghouse Research Center report, 36 million people attended college since 1993 yet didn’t earn their degrees and weren’t enrolled in college as of December 2018. The population, known as Some College, No Degree by the center, increased by 6.6 million in the intervening years since it first released its data report.
According to the report, most of the population is nearing middle age (between 39 and 42), 56% left college when they were in their 20s or younger, and 53% left college within two years. More than half (51%) are women, although their reasons for leaving weren’t detailed in the report. Most of them (74%) attended one educational institution, and 67% started and ended their short-lived college careers in community colleges.
Do these things sound familiar to you? If they do, then you should consider going back to college and completing your degree! You will find numerous benefits to a college degree, from earning $468/week more than a high school graduate to enjoying greater career stability and a sense of identity. In the current pandemic with its pervasive uncertainty, the edge of a college degree cannot be overemphasized!
Don’t worry about starting from square one either! There are plenty of online degree completion programs offered by universities and colleges across the United States. These programs are your best bets in earning your college degree at your own time, at your speed, and at affordable costs, too.
But what are degree completion programs? These are higher education programs specifically designed for people who have started but didn’t finish their four-year undergraduate degree. Universities and colleges that offer these programs accept some or all the credits earned by students from another institution and provide them with a faster path toward a bachelor’s degree.

Some degree completion programs also accept students who have earned their associate degree but want to earn a bachelor’s degree. This is typically the case for community college students who wish to further their higher education.
Aside from people who belong to the so-called Some College, No Degree population, the people who will benefit from enrolling in a degree completion program include:
- Adult learners who have acquired career experience over several decades but haven’t attended college;
- Military service members and veterans who can use their career experience to earn their degree over a shorter period
Indeed, there’s no age limit as to who can enroll in a degree completion program! But there will likely be restrictions on the types and number of college credits that can be accepted.
With several online degree programs available, it can be challenging to choose the best one for your unique needs. We suggest asking these questions to narrow down your choices:
- Does the school offer the area of study or degree program you’re interested in?
- Does it offer affordable and flexible learning options, such as fully online and blended learning?
- Does its transfer credit policies work in your favor? (The more of your previous credits are accepted, the shorter your study time can be)
- Does it offer satisfactory student support? (Tech and teacher support services are a must for online students)
Keep in mind that the path toward a college degree is filled with challenges, particularly when you’re juggling other personal and professional responsibilities. But it’s possible to earn your college degree finally, and many can serve as your inspiration in this journey.
